Syria: Assad called an emergency cabinet meeting

A series of emergency measures were announced to deal with the consequences of the devastating earthquake

The president of Syria Bashar al-Assad chaired an emergency cabinet meeting to assess the damage from the deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake that killed hundreds in Turkey and Syria, according to a Facebook post by Syria’s health ministry.

The provisional death toll from the earthquake rose to 237 dead and 639 injured, only in Syria, as announced by the Syrian Ministry of Health.

The initial situation after the great earthquake was assessed and the most affected provinces and locations were identified, which mainly concern the provinces of Aleppo, Hama and Latakia.

A number of emergency measures were announced to deal with the consequences of the devastating earthquake:

– Notification of all ministries and agencies
– Activation of civil defense, fire forces of health services and their branches in the provinces, all service institutions and public service managers to carry out rescue and debris removal operations. All governors were also called upon to mobilize all capabilities in the public and private sectors and to mobilize all mechanisms to carry out rescue operations and contribute to the relief of the wreckage.
– Ensuring emergency health care for all earthquake victims in various provinces and notifying all medical personnel of the ministries of health, defense and education.

Instructions were also given to urgently secure shelter and food for those affected and to secure oil to provide emergency technical operations in the affected provinces.
