War in Ukraine: Over 13 million uprooted according to UN figures

The conflict “shows no sign” that it is heading for de-escalation, said Martin Griffiths, the UN’s deputy secretary-general.

Martin Griffiths, UN Under-Secretary-General for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, said on Monday that since the outbreak of the armed conflict in Ukraine, nearly a year ago, nearly 8 million people have fled the country and another 5, 3 million have been displaced within Ukrainian territory.

Addressing the Security Council meeting in New York, Mr. Griffiths also emphasized that 17.6 million citizens of Ukraine — or about 40% of the population — are in need of humanitarian assistance.

The top United Nations official said he will present this year’s plan for humanitarian aid to Ukraine, estimated to cost $3.9 billion, later this month in Geneva.

The conflict “has no indication” that it is heading for de-escalation, he stressed.

According to Mr Griffiths, at least 7,000 civilians have been killed since Russia’s military invaded Ukraine on February 24, 2022, based on figures verified by the UN. But “the real toll of victims is undoubtedly higher”, he underlined.

As the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has pointed out, the war in Ukraine has caused the largest refugee crisis since World War II.
