Carrick, 48, pleaded guilty to 49 charges relating to 12 victims between 2003 and 2020

A former London police officer was today jailed for at least 30 years for a “series of violent sexual assaults” on women.

David Carrick, 48, who worked for the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Service, used his position of power to intimidate many of his victims, saying no one would believe them as it was their word against that of a serving officer, as prosecutors said.

Carrick, 48, previously pleaded guilty to 49 charges relating to 12 victims between 2003 and 2020, making him one of the worst sex offenders in Britain’s history.

Carrick’s offences, which include 24 rapes, were committed while he was serving in the Metropolitan Police – further increasing pressure on Britain’s biggest police service, which has already been hit by a series of scandals in recent years. The case exacerbated the crisis of confidence plaguing Scotland Yard following the case of Sarah Everard, a 33-year-old Londoner who was abducted, raped and murdered in 2021 by a Metropolitan police officer.

Carrick appeared at a London court today where he was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum sentence of 32 years less time already served. Those sentenced to life in prison must serve a minimum sentence and are only released if they are no longer considered a danger to society.

British Home Secretary Suella Braverman called Carrick’s crimes an “indelible trauma” for the police. “It is vital to find out how he was able to wear the uniform for so long,” he said.

Carrick had come to the attention of the authorities for nine incidents, including allegations of harassment, assault and rape, between 2000 and October 2021, when he was first charged. The London police force, which dismissed Carrick from its ranks last month, has previously apologized for failing to spot the pattern of abuse and assault he was following earlier.

Prosecutor Tom Little told the court yesterday that some of the 49 charges related to multiple incidents and that Carrick had admitted “at least 71 incidents of serious sexual assault”. Some of his victims filed written statements in court in which I stated that they no longer trust the police.

Carrick’s barrister, Alistair Williamson, told the court his client “accepts full responsibility for what he has done”.

Carrick told one victim he was a police officer and the “safest person” she could be with before he lured her back to his home and raped her at gunpoint.
