Serious damage to the port of Iskenderun after the earthquakes and fire – Ships are diverted to neighboring hubs

by

The port area was hit by the two strong earthquakes with many flattened buildings and casualties.

The port of the southern Turkish city of Iskenderun (Alexandretta) suffered significant structural damage due to the earthquake with all operations suspended until further notice, container shipping company AP Molier Maersk said today.

Maersk said in a note that it is not yet clear when the port will resume normal operations.

“Given the situation in Iskenderun, we will have to make a change of destination for all reservations that were destined for the port or were already at sea,” the company said.

“At this time we plan to divert the containers to neighboring operationally feasible hubs or remain at transshipment ports — including the port of Mersin (in Turkey) and Port Said (in Egypt),” it said.

It is recalled that a large fire broke out in the port after the earthquake.

In the videos broadcast by the foreign media, the fire appears to have broken out in the area with the containers.
