New Zealand authorities announced today that they have spotted floating in the sea, recovered and seized 3.2 tons of cocaine, with an estimated value of almost 300 million euros, which they believe was destined for the Australian market.
New Zealand police said in a press release that the drugs were found floating in the Pacific Ocean during a joint operation with customs and the Navy.
A photo released by police to the media shows the cargo before it was pulled up, in nets that appear to be holding buoys afloat.
No arrests have been made at this stage.
The amount of drugs seized is “one of the largest” New Zealand authorities have ever found, New Zealand police chief Andrew Koster said in a press release.
The seizure deals a serious blow to organized crime but we will “remain vigilant”, especially given where traffickers can go to “avoid attracting the attention of law enforcement”, he added.
The seized quantity is estimated to be worth NZ$500 million (US$320 million, about 298 million euros), according to Bill Perry, acting chief of the New Zealand Customs Service.
