US President Joe Biden has reiterated that the US will continue to support Ukraine “for as long as it takes” in the war that broke out when Russian armed forces invaded its territory nearly a year ago, while urging lawmakers to cheer for its ambassador of the Ukrainian government, next to him on the podium.
“She not only represents her country, but the courage of her people,” the US president said during his speech. Together with NATO, he reiterated, the US will continue to help Ukraine repel “the aggression launched by (Russian President Vladimir) Putin” and “will stand by the Ukrainian people.”
Mr. Biden also noted that America will “take action” if China threatens its national sovereignty.
At another point in his speech, the US president emphasized that the US must “face” the climate crisis, which he described as an “existential threat”.
“We have an obligation, not only to ourselves, but also to our children and grandchildren, to address it” and “I am proud to see that America is finally taking up the challenge,” said the head of state.
At the same time, Mr. Biden described the gigantic profits of companies in the oil sector as “scandalous” and at the same time called for a “minimum tax” to be imposed on billionaires.
“The tax system is not fair,” the US president told Congress. “I propose quadrupling the taxes” on stock buybacks to “encourage longer-term investment,” Mr. Biden added.
