Almost a year after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Poland and Germany share the need to support Kyiv, German defense minister noted
Western partners will be able to deliver the first batch of Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine within the next 2-3 months, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said today from the Polish capital.
“We could deliver at least one in the first four months of this year – three months maybe – and then we have to move as quickly as possible,” Pistorius stressed, clarifying that he was referring to 31 tanks.
Almost a year after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Poland and Germany share the need to support Kyiv, the German minister noted, adding that the two countries agreed to meet next week with partners who may also deliver tanks Leopard 2.
Responding to repeated calls by Kiev and following mounting pressure from some Western allies, Berlin announced last month that it would deliver modern Leopard 2 main battle tanks from the German army’s stockpiles.
It will also raise funds with Denmark and the Netherlands to modernize at least 100 old Leopard 1 tanks destined for Ukraine.
Pistorius, who made a surprise visit to Kyiv on Tuesday, said the Germans are humbled by the determination with which the Ukrainians are fighting.
