15-month-old Jacob was found with massive swelling and bruising to his face, with his mother calling for help, claiming the infant hit his head, saying: “It looks like he fell out of bed or something.”
Doctors found that his eyes were so swollen that they could not be opened and that he had dark bruises under them.
The infant was found dead and was diagnosed with cardiac arrest and died almost an hour before being taken to hospital.
The 15-month-old also had bruises on his forehead, one side of his temples and his cheeks, while his skull was “almost as soft as a sponge”, the coroner said.
At the same time, medical examiners told the court that his genitals were swollen and severely injured, consistent with an “extremely strong pinch” or “bite”, which the prosecution described as “sadistic”.
Finally, according to the court, the infant’s tests revealed a quantity of cocaine in his body.
