Devastating wildfires – some of the worst in world history – have been raging out of control for nearly 10 days in central Chile.
The fiery inferno – literally – has so far claimed the lives of at least 26 people, burned more than 2,900,000 acres and destroyed 1,150 homes.

There are hundreds of burn victims in hospitals and tens of thousands of people who have left their homes.
The environmental damage is also enormous – still incalculable.
More than 5,600 firefighters are fighting to extinguish 82 fires out of 309 ongoing fronts in the country.
The provinces of Biobio, Niuble and La Araucania, in the central part of the country, have been hardest hit and have been declared a state of disaster by the Chilean government.
Absolute chaos in Chile today. 7 people have been reported killed so far during this week’s fires. I am getting reports from helicopter pilots down there working, seeing entire villages run over while they try to operate. However, fires are now threatening other areas of the country due to a heat wave – a red warning has been issued for some areas of Los Rios province in southern Chile, near the cities of Coral and Valdivia.
“It could create a very difficult situation from a climatic point of view,” assessed the Deputy Minister of the Interior Manuel Monsalne, referring to new outbreaks of fires.
International aid has also arrived in Chile
The US, Spain, Argentina and Mexico have sent aircraft, trucks, helicopters, drones and personnel. France announced yesterday the dispatch of personnel to assist Chilean firefighters.
