Authorities discovered the ampoules hidden in a bag of chocolates inside a woman’s suitcase, the woman claimed she was going to Vienna on vacation and wanted it for personal use.
Smuggling of Botox ampoules was prevented by the British Bases in Dekelia, when customs officials identified a person in possession of dozens of such preparations.
According to a statement from the British Bases, the incident occurred towards the end of 2022, when customs officials discovered 45 ampoules of Mas Port 500 – better known as Botox – hidden in a bag of chocolates inside a woman’s suitcase.
Upon questioning, the woman claimed she was going to Vienna on vacation for two weeks and was taking the botox with her for personal use.
Dekelia Bases customs chief Mark Hartley said her explanation immediately raised suspicions. “He gave no credible explanation as to why he needed such a large amount of botox for a two-week holiday. Her claim was that her partner had given them to her as a gift and because she was 45 years old she intended to inject botox all over her body,” according to the head of customs.
Counterfeit products are one of the most common items smuggled out of the occupied territories and the customs official said that cannot be ruled out in this case either. “Botox is not usually detected at crossing points and because its origin remains undetermined due to a lack of original documentation, it is suspected that Botox could be ‘monkey’.”
A monkey botox, he continued, can lead to serious health consequences with adverse effects, “such as tissue necrosis, facial paralysis, scarring and allergic reactions. Sources of botulinum toxin are distributed by unlicensed retailers overseas.”
All botox ampoules were confiscated and a fine was paid.
