“Roads have been destroyed. People are dying. Now is the time to explore all possible avenues for aid and personnel to reach all affected areas,” Guterres said.

UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Coordination Martin Griffiths will visit Gaziantep in Turkey and Aleppo and Damascus in Syria at the weekend to assess needs following the twin deadly and devastating earthquakes and to see how the United Nations can best strengthen its support, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said today.

The United Nations has announced a $25 million grant to help jump-start humanitarian aid. Funds from the United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) will help provide life-saving emergency assistance in the region.

Guterres also pressed for greater aid access to opposition-held northwest Syria.

“Roads have been destroyed. People are dying. Now is the time to explore all possible avenues for aid and personnel to reach all affected areas,” Guterres told reporters in New York.

A little earlier, UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen said that Syrians affected by the deadly earthquake need “more than anything” in terms of aid.

Today, four days after the disaster, the first humanitarian aid convoy for the earthquake victims in the rebel-held areas of northern Syria crossed the Bab al-Hawa border crossing.
