US helicopters are helping rescuers reach hard-to-reach areas
US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu today for the second time in four days to discuss how Washington can help Turkey and Syria after the devastating earthquakes.
“This was primarily an effort to find out from our Turkish allies what they would want from the United States,” State Department spokesman Ned Price said. The US will soon be able to say more about the aid it will provide to Turkey, he added.
According to Price, Cavusoglu detailed Turkey’s needs and Washington “will do everything it can to meet the needs that the Turks have mentioned.”
The spokesman also said US helicopters are helping rescuers reach hard-to-reach areas. He recalled that the US has sent a 200-person disaster response team. It is also planned to send generators, medical supplies, tents for the homeless, water and water purification systems.
Price also said the US would continue to demand unhindered humanitarian access to Syria and urged the government of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to immediately allow aid to pass through the border crossings.
