“I am on my way to Syria, where WHO is supporting the provision of basic health care in areas affected by the recent earthquake, building on our long-standing work in the country,” wrote Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
The director-general of the World Health Organization announced today on his Twitter account that he is “on his way” to Syria, which was hit on Monday like neighboring Turkey by a powerful earthquake, whose total death toll already exceeds 20,000.
“I am on my way to Syria, where WHO is supporting the provision of basic health care in areas affected by the recent earthquake, building on our long-standing work in the country,” wrote Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus.
Almost simultaneously, the UN announced that Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Martin Griffiths would travel this weekend to the affected areas in Turkey and Syria.
Griffiths will travel to Gaziantep in southern Turkey and Aleppo in northwestern Syria. During this visit, he will also meet with “the authorities of the Syrian capital, Damascus”.
On Wednesday, the head of the WHO told a press conference that “with these weather conditions and the aftershocks that continue, we are fighting against time to save lives.” “People need shelter, food, drinking water and medical care to treat their injuries caused by the earthquake, but also for other health needs.”
