“At this stage we have no indication of an immediate military threat, emanating from Russia, against Moldova or Romania,” the State Department’s deputy spokesman told reporters.
The US is backing Moldova but sees no “imminent threat” to the former Soviet republic bordering Ukraine or Romania after a Russian missile flew through its airspace on Friday.
“In this situation we have no clue of a direct military threat, originating from Russia, against Moldova or Romania”, State Department deputy spokesman Vedant Patel told reporters. “In general, we support the national sovereignty and territorial integrity of Moldova as well as its neutrality provided by its Constitution”he added.
Earlier today, the Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stated that two Russian cruise missiles crossed the airspace of Romania and Moldova before entering Ukraine. Romania’s Defense Ministry denied, however, that any missile entered the airspace.
Moldova, for its part, announced that it had summoned Russia’s ambassador to protest “the unacceptable violation of our airspace by a Russian missile,” as reported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
When asked about the resignation of the pro-Western Moldovan government and the appointment of former interior minister Dorin Recean as prime minister, the US representative limited himself to saying that the US “respects” the decisions Chisinau makes.
