Governor DeSandis ordered in September that 48 immigrants be airlifted from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard Island, a vacation spot for American high society, in the state of Massachusetts (northeast), with taxpayer money.
Florida’s state legislature on Friday voted in a special session to approve a law authorizing Republican Gov. Ron DeSandis to transfer undocumented immigrants to other states, even if they live outside of Florida.
The text expands the scope of a law already passed in 2022 that allowed such transfers to other states, but only for people who lived in Florida.
Governor DeSandis ordered in September that 48 immigrants be airlifted from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard Island, a vacation spot for American high society, in the state of Massachusetts (northeast), with taxpayer money.
He thus participated in the initiative taken by the Republican governors of Texas and Arizona, who decided to move undocumented immigrants to Democratic-controlled cities in the north and east of the US, in protest of the policy pursued by Democratic President Joe Biden in the immigration issue.
Florida Democratic Sen. Jason Pizzo sued Gov. DeSandis’ administration, accusing it of misusing public funds after the transfers last year, arguing they were breaking the law because the immigrants were in Texas, not the U.S. Florida.
The text approved yesterday—it just needs to be signed by Mr. DeSandis—removes any restriction on this: it allows the transfer of illegal immigrants regardless of where they are in the US.
The vote comes as Florida has seen a surge in immigrant arrivals, particularly from Cuba and Haiti, to its shores in recent weeks.
Mr. DeSandis is building a national profile as speculation mounts that he may be the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election against Donald Trump.
