Eleven people, most of them civilians, died on Saturday in an attack attributed to the Islamic State (IS) jihadist group in central Syria, the non-governmental Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said on Sunday.
Members of the jihadist group “attacked around 75 people on Saturday as they were picking truffles in Palmyra district, a provincial area near Homs,” said the Britain-based NGO, which has a wide network of sources in war-torn Syria.
The attack resulted in the death of “ten civilians, among them a woman, and a member of the regime forces” of Damascus, while several other people are missing, according to the same source.
Syrian state media also reported on the attack, but gave a less heavy casualty count. IS “terrorists” opened fire with “machine guns” killing four civilians, the official SANA news agency reported.
He added that ten people were injured in the attack, some of them “seriously”.

In April 2021 at least 19 people, most of them civilians, were kidnapped by the jihadist organization in a province in the central sector of the country while they were looking for truffles.
