Following the devastating earthquake that hit both Syria and Turkey last week, the EU continues to work on all fronts to channel emergency assistance in both countries.
For Syria: European humanitarian response capacity provides rapid relief to people affected by the earthquake. EU stocks in Italy and Dubai have been mobilized to deliver emergency supplies.
Included are items such as winter tents, heaters, blankets, water, as well as hygiene-related packages. Aid will be distributed both to government-controlled areas together with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), and to non-government-controlled areas in northwestern Syria in cooperation with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). . In addition, the Commission is considering opportunities for a Team Europe approach, working with Member States to mobilize refuge species from their stocks.
In addition, through EU Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), 10 European countries (Austria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Finland, Germany, Greece, Italy, Romania, Slovenia and Norway) have donated thousands of tents, blankets, sleeping bags, mattresses, beds, generators, heaters, medicine, food, winter clothes, masks and more to the Syrian people.
Two Emergency Response Coordination Center (ERCC) liaison officers will be deployed to Beirut today to support the coordination of incoming EU aid to Syria. This is in addition to an additional initial €3.5 million in humanitarian aid to cover the most urgent needs, such as cash for shelters and non-food items, water, health, research and rescue.

Already 21 EU member states and three participating states in the UCPM have offered a total of 38 teams – Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Lithuania, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia and Spain, along with Albania, Montenegro and Serbia.
