Imprisoned Russian dissident Alexei Navalny exchanged Valentine’s Day wishes with his wife Yulia via Instagram, saying it has been almost a year since he last saw her in person.

“Sometimes I myself wonder how my great love for you fits into an ordinary human heart. I talk to you all the time,” said Navalny, affectionately calling her “Yuliaska.”

Iulia, for her part, responded by posting a photo of them hugging, accompanied by a heart emoji.

Navalny, who survived a 2020 poisoning attempt, is serving a total of 11.5 years in a penal colony east of Moscow on charges including fraud and contempt of court.

Human rights groups and Western governments say the staunch opponent of President Putin has been the victim of fabricated cases aimed at silencing him for his criticism of President Vladimir Putin.

Navalny has been able to post on social media through his lawyers and associates, who have expressed growing concern for his health after repeated extended periods of solitary confinement for minor violations of prison rules.

Russian authorities say Navalny is being treated like any other prisoner.
