Amidst the debris from the deadly earthquakes of February 6 in Turkey, scenarios are rife that Erdogan will try to postpone the elections, so that he has time to shake the climate against him.

As SKAI correspondent Manolis Kostidis reportsthere are already rumors of postponing the elections scheduled for May 14.

The former speaker of the Turkish parliament and AKP official said that the elections should be postponed because there will be no electoral rolls and there are many displaced people.

The reaction of the opposition was immediate, accusing ErdoÄŸan that “you are afraid of the elections, you will be held accountable”.

However, the Constitution of Turkey says that postponed only in case of war. Also, it has no power over the electoral court and in order for the elections to be postponed, the parliament would have to decide with a broad consensus, i.e. the opposition should also say “yes”, which does not say so and gives an extension to Erdogan only until June 18, when the four-year period ends.

Erdogan: The earthquakes were like hundreds of atomic bombs hitting us

At the same time, Tayyip Erdogan likened the earthquakes that hit Turkey to hundreds of atomic bombs that fell on his country. As Manolis Kostidis reports, 2,200,000 residents left the earthquake areas and went to the big cities or where they had relatives.

About 890,000 are being accommodated in tents and 50,000 in hotels, Erdogan said, adding that 10,000 tents and 5,400 containers have been set up and an estimated 1.6 million people are being accommodated in them. In total an estimated 3,800,000 citizens were left homeless.

At the same time, Erdogan thanked the countries that helped and made special reference to the Emir of Qatar, who will send 10,000 containers that were used in the World Cup.

Finally, tonight there will be a telethon in Turkey and it is the first time that all channels – opposition and non-opposition – will broadcast together.
