The “symbolic” limit of one million infections a day from Covid-19 was exceeded, for the first time, in the week of December 23-29, a few hours before the New Year celebrations that are once again overshadowed by the pandemic.
On average, 1,045,000 new cases were recorded daily during this period, an increase of + 46% compared to the previous week, according to the count made by the French Agency, based on the official announcements of each country.
The previous record, of 817,000 cases in a 24-hour period, was recorded in the week of April 23-29, 2021.
Due to the “tsunami” cases, many cities decided to cancel New Year’s events, such as Sao Paulo, Brazil. In France, where more than 200,000 cases have been reported for a second day, nightclubs will remain closed for at least another three weeks.
In Spain, the events were canceled in most areas and only in Madrid, in Puerta del Sol, there will be a celebration, of limited duration and with the participation of only 7,000 people, who will be required to wear a mask.
More than 85% of infections are recorded in two regions where the Omicron variant predominates: Europe (4,022,000 cases in the last seven days) and North America (2,264,000 cases). In Asia alone, with 268,000 cases, infections were reduced by 12%.
In Europe, many countries (Iceland, Finland, France, Denmark) have a record number of cases. Spain today recorded a negative record, with 161,688 infections in 24 hours.
