Hundreds children have lost their lives in war in Ukraine and millions more are at great risk, the United Nations Children’s Fund said yesterday on Wednesday (UNICEF).

Between February 24, 2022 and January 2023, at least 438 children were killed and another 842 injured in the hostilities, the UNICEF Germany branch said in a press release issued in Cologne.

Unexploded ordnance and landmines in vast areas of the country set in danger the lives of millions of others, he continued.

At the same time, countless families are in need humanitarian aid due to the destruction of infrastructure.

About 3.3 million children and young people are in immediate need of humanitarian assistance, while around 16 million people in the country do not have safe access to drinking water and sanitation networks, the UN children’s agency pointed out.

“We must not allow children and young people to Ukraine to become a lost generation,” said Georg Graf Waldersee, the head of UNICEF Germany.

They must be offered secure access in drinking water and health services to millions of people in the country, while children and young people must be given the opportunity to be educated and psychosocial support, according to him.
