The draft resolution that will be put to a vote on Monday in the Security Council reiterates that “the establishment of settlements in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, constitutes a “flagrant violation of international law”
His Security Council UN is studying a draft resolution — the contents of which came to the knowledge of the Reuters news agency yesterday Wednesday — that requires Israel to “immediately and completely stop settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.”
The vote in the 15-member Security Council, according to diplomatic sources, is likely to be held on Monday. The draft resolution was prepared by the United Arab Emirates, in coordination with the Palestinians, they clarified.
On Sunday, his government Benjamin Netanyahu legalized six Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, which until now were considered arbitrary under Israeli legislation, while he announced the initiation of procedures for the construction of 10,000 new residential units in pre-existing ones.
Her announcements, despite the recent visit of the head of American diplomacy to the region during which he expressly warned against the resumption of settlement activity in the occupied territories, in order to de-escalate the tension, prompted the Anthony Blinken to state “deeply concerned”.
The most recent decision of the UN Security Council in which he deserved the Israel to stop settlement in the occupied territories dates back to 2016. It was adopted after the decision of then US President Barack Obama for the US to abstain in that vote, making a rare break with its longstanding practice of defending its close ally Israel at the United Nations.
The US and Israeli delegations did not immediately respond when asked by Reuters to comment on the draft resolution.
The text repeats that “the establishment of settlements in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem”, constitutes “a flagrant violation of international law”.
It also condemns all annexation of territories, including decisions and measures of the Israeli authorities on the settlements.
Israel captured the West Bank in the Arab-Israeli war of June 1967. More than 475,000 Israeli settlers live in settlements in the West Bank—beyond East Jerusalem—among 2.8 million Palestinians. Most of the international community considers the settlement illegal.
