Thirty-one bodies in two secret mass graves were buried by the Mexican authorities in the western part of the country, an area that has been tested for years by a wave of violence from organized crime, prosecutors announced Thursday.

“We counted 31 victims”Jalisco state prosecutor Luis Joaquin Mendes told the press, adding that authorities have evidence that allows them to recognition of about halfto then be delivered to the families.

The first secret tomb was discovered on February 1 at the San Isidro Massatepec site in the municipality of Tlachomulco de Zuñiga. After days of searching and exhuming body bags, was also found second.

The state Jaliscosectors of which are controlled by the powerful Nea Genia tou Jalisco (KNGH) cartel, are among those hardest hit by the wave of organized crime violence.

In 2022, they were found 301 bodies in 41 secret mass gravesvs 544 in 2020. A tragic record was set that year.
