Vietnam police discovered approx 2,000 dead cats which were intended to be used in traditional medicine.

The corpses of felines were discovered yesterday, Thursday, in a slaughterhouse in Dong Thap Province, Mekong Delta (South Vietnam), along with other 480 live catsaccording to the province’s official newspaper.

Weighing a total of four tonnes, the bodies had been placed in a cold room before being turned into traditional medicine products following a lengthy boiling process, according to the newspaper.

Some Vietnamese believe that cat bone broth helps treat diseases such as asthma and osteoporosis.

The carcasses of the cats were destroyed, while the rescued cats will undergo health checks.

THE consumption of dogs and cats still is legal in Vietnam and numerous restaurants in the country offer meat from these animals, but the persons involved in this trade must have certificates certifying the origin of the animals.

The Dong Thap slaughterhouse did not have documents to allow the animals to be slaughtered and to indicate their origin.

So far no arrests have been made in this case.

According to the non-governmental organization Four Pows International, up to one million cats fall victim to this trade in Vietnam each year.
