Last May, it jointly applied with Sweden to join NATO, but Turkey has yet to ratify their request because it says the two countries support Kurdish terrorists.
Finland’s parliament will vote on February 28 to approve the necessary legislation to allow the country to eventually join NATO, the head of the parliament’s foreign affairs committee said today.
“The goal is to have the process of changing the national legislation required to join NATO be completed this legislative term,” Yossi Hala-aho told reporters today, two weeks before parliament is dissolved ahead of April 2 parliamentary elections.
The relevant legislation is expected to be approved by the Finnish parliament, as most MPs are in favor of the country joining NATO. If this happens, Helsinki will be one step closer than Stockholm to joining the Alliance.
In May, Finland and Sweden submitted a joint application to join NATO, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. However, Turkey, a member of the Alliance, has not yet ratified their request because, as it complains, the two countries support Kurdish terrorists.
The two Nordic countries cannot join NATO until their request is ratified by Turkey and Hungary.
Sweden and Finland have indicated that they wish to join NATO at the same time, but the leaders of the two countries have not ruled out the possibility of Helsinki achieving this goal first.
