The head of American diplomacy Anthony Blinken contacted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas in succession on Saturday, calling on them to “restore calm” in the region.

He recalled that Washington has been in favor of a two-state solution, one Israeli and one Palestinian, while he expressed the opposition of the American government to policies that endanger the viability of such an agreement and “to unilateral actions that would lead to further escalation of tension” , said US State Department spokesman Ned Price.

On Thursday, the White House announced that it was “deeply displeased” with the Israeli government’s decision to legalize nine Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank and build new homes in existing ones. At the same time, however, Washington opposes any Security Council resolution requiring Israel to stop settlement activities in the occupied Palestinian territories.

The State Department spokesman said that in yesterday’s phone call Blinken-Abbas also discussed measures to “improve the living standards of the Palestinians”, while with Prime Minister Netanyahu the US Secretary of State discussed, among other things, the threat of Iran and expressed the “unwavering commitment ” of the US on Israel’s security.
