Today, as part of the response measures of the largest bird flu outbreak that has occurred so far in the EU, the Commission is harmonizing the vaccination rules of animals against the most serious zoonotic diseases. Concerning bird flu, special rules will be established for vaccination as a measure of disease control or prevention. This will enable the safe movement of animals and products from facilities and zones where vaccination has been carried out.

The Lady Stella Kyriakidou, Commissioner for Health and Food Safety, said: “In light of the worst outbreak of bird flu in the EU’s recent history, fighting this disease is at the top of our priorities. These outbreaks cause huge losses in poultry farming and hamper trade. The rules presented today will allow for the harmonization of the use of vaccination to prevent and control the spread of disease and will set conditions that will allow the movement of vaccinated animals and their products.”

These new rules are consistent with the international standards of the World Organization for Animal Health and take into account the new scientific knowledge available and the experience gained in the implementation of the current Union rules.

The new rules are published today in the Official Gazette and will come into effect on March 12.
