The disappearance of the 45-year-old mother of two minor girls while walking her dog along the banks of the river in the St Michaels-on-Wire area on the morning of January 27 had sparked the interest of the whole of Britain, with developments surrounding the police investigations preoccupying the media in the country every day.
“Today’s development is not the outcome any of us would have liked, but we hope it can at least begin to provide some answers for Nicola’s loved ones, who remain at the forefront of our thoughts.” an officer with the Lancashire Police Department said in a statement late Monday afternoon.
A family statement read by another police officer said their worst fears had been confirmed. “We will never be able to understand what Nikki went through in her final moments. We will never forget Nikki,” the family’s statement added.
The statement was then lashed out against certain media outlets (ITV and Sky News) who breached the family’s privacy and others who distorted statements from Nicola’s relatives and friends.
