Six civilians were killed and 12 injured today by Russian shelling of a market and a public transport stop in the southern Ukrainian city Kherson, the army of Ukraine announced.

“A local market and a public transport stop were bombed. Kherson civilians were injured and killed right in the middle of the road, in their homes and workplaces,” according to the launch. “So far, there are about 6 dead and 12 injured.”

The southern military command said in a statement that Kherson came under fire as Russian President Vladimir Putin delivered a speech in which he portrayed his country as not at war with the Ukrainian people.

Russian shelling hit residential areas, infrastructure, a kindergarten and a hospital, according to the military.

“Many buildings were severely damaged and many apartments in high-rise buildings are burning as a result of the strikes,” he added.

The port infrastructure of the city of Ochakiv was also targeted and hit with multiple rocket launchers, injuring one person.

“The Russian army is fiercely shelling Kherson. Once again, it mercilessly kills the civilian population,” wrote President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky on Telegram, confirming the death toll.

“The world has no right to forget for a single moment that Russian brutality and aggression know no bounds,” he said in a post that accompanied photos of bodies lying on the pavement, smashed shop fronts and a damaged public transport stop.

Local authorities reported that the city was attacked by Russian forces using Grad multiple missile launchers.

Ukraine recaptured Kherson in November after nearly eight months of occupation by Russian forces who seized it soon after the Russian invasion of Ukraine began a year ago.

The city of Kherson and the surrounding areas are under almost constant bombardment by Russian forces on the opposite side of the Dnieper River.
