German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius insisted yesterday that his country must stick to its pledge to spend at least 2% of its gross national product annually on defence.
In his first visit to a German naval installation – in Eckenferde – since taking up his new duties last month, Mr Pistorius stressed there was no dilemma over whether to prioritize social or defense spending.
At the same time, he insisted that as part of his position he is responsible for “guaranteeing the security” of the country and “that Germany will respect the obligations it undertook towards the alliance” (including NATO) and its “commitments regarding the National Defence”.
It remains to be seen how Germany’s coalition government will finance the achievement of this goal, he continued.
“Nobody doubts that the 2% target must be reached. Now the question is how,” he added, adding that the discussion must be open.
