China’s government announced today that top diplomat Wang Yi met with Russian National Security Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev and that the two sides agreed to resolutely protect “peace and stability” in the Asia-Pacific region, while opposing the cold war “mentality”.

Mr. Wang met, in addition to Mr. Patrushev, with leaders of the China-Russia Strategic Security Consultation Mechanism, according to a press release from the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

The parties exchanged views on the situation in Ukraine, the text continues, which does not go into details.

They also expressed their commitment “to true multilateral cooperation, to opposing any form of unilateral intimidation, to promoting the democratization of international relations and the multipolar world.”

Mr. Wang is expected to meet with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov later in the day as part of his visit.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said he did not rule out the possibility of a meeting between the top Chinese doubles as well.
