German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius today expressed his reservations about Beijing’s proposals to end the war in Ukraine.

“When I hear information – and I don’t know if it is true – that China plans to supply kamikaze drones to Russia, while at the same time presenting a peace plan, then I suggest that we judge China by its actions, not its words,” says Boris Pistorius in an interview with the German network Deutschlandfunk.

Pistorius’ comments echo the positions of NATO and the European Commission, which expressed reservations about Beijing’s credibility as a mediator after a Chinese proposal for a ceasefire was announced.

Beijing made the proposal public on Friday, on the first anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky welcomed some elements of the Chinese proposal, but said that only the country on whose territory a war is being waged should take the initiative for a peace plan.

Germany’s defense minister stressed that it was up to Kiev to decide when and under what conditions it would enter into talks with Moscow, adding that the same would apply to any decision to retake the Crimean peninsula annexed by Moscow in 2014.

“I tend to say, yes, Crimea is Ukrainian territory and therefore it should be returned,” he states in the interview. “But again: this is not a decision we will make.”

Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that Ukrainian military forces will expel Russia from all occupied Ukrainian territories, including the Crimean peninsula.”
