“Record seizure in 2023 of more than eight tons of cocaine,” General Fausto Salinas said via Twitter.
Ecuadorian authorities have seized 8.8 tons of cocaine hidden among bananas in a container at the port of Guayaquil bound for Belgium, the police chief announced.
“Record seizure in 2023 of more than eight tons of cocaine,” General Fausto Salinas said via Twitter.
“We prevented the international sale of 90 million doses worth $330 million in Europe,” he added, uploading video showing police officers searching the container.
Between Colombia and Peru, the two countries where the largest quantities of cocaine are produced in the world, Ecuador has been transformed in recent years from part of the transit routes into a major hub for the trafficking of the white powder to the European and US markets.
The authorities proceeded to confiscate a record quantity in 2021: it approached 210 tons.
In 2022, seizures topped 200 tonnes for the second consecutive year — 61% of which was hidden in containers of bananas for export. In 2023, 31 tons have already been seized.
