A video of the Turkish president handing out money to children who lost everything in the earthquake in southeastern Turkey has been circulating in the neighboring country for the past few hours, further tarnishing the image of the Turkish president, whose popularity has collapsed three weeks after the killer earthquake.

“Chairman of the Development and Justice Party, Tayyip Erdogan, distributes money to children in Antiyaman, an earthquake-affected area,” reports a report in the Turkish newspaper Cumhuriyet.

The video shows the Turkish president handing out banknotes to earthquake-stricken children in the southeastern province of Antiyam during his visit yesterday, February 27 to citizens who greeted him with cheers and applause, hours after he admitted that the government had not responded promptly and adequately to first two days of major earthquakes.

Images of Erdogan “giving charity” to young children were branded embarrassing on social media and sparked public outrage.
