The US government has not reached a definitive conclusion about the origin of the pandemic
Beijing today assessed that the FBI’s credibility was damaged after the statements of its director Christopher Wray, who assessed that the covid-19 pandemic was “highly likely” to be caused by a leak from a laboratory in the city of Wuhan.
Wray’s remarks on Fox News came two days after the US Department of Energy made the same assessment.
The fact that the FBI is “resorting to this lab leak theory does not discredit China in any way, but it hurts its credibility even more,” said Mao Ning, a spokeswoman for China’s foreign ministry.
“Given the lies, fraud and countless misdeeds of the American Intelligence services, their conclusions have absolutely no credibility,” she emphasized.
The statements of the head of the FBI were made after the article published on Sunday in the Wall Street Journal newspaper, according to which the US Department of Energy has estimated, with a low degree of certainty, that the pandemic is due to an accidental leak from a laboratory in Wuhan.
Four other US agencies, as well as a National Intelligence Panel, still believe covid-19 was caused by natural transmission, while two other agencies have yet to reach a conclusion, the Wall Street Journal reported.
White House National Security Spokesperson John Kirby said Monday that the US government has not reached a definitive conclusion about the origin of the pandemic.
In the same interview, Ray also accused China of trying to obstruct the US investigation into the origins of the pandemic.
“The Chinese government (…) has done everything it can to try to oppose and complicate the work that we’ve been doing, the work that the US government and our close foreign partners” are conducting, the FBI chief said.
“It’s sad for the whole world,” he added.
Beijing categorically denies these allegations. At the regular press conference, Mao reiterated the view that the World Health Organization should also look into American laboratories, notably the one at Fort Netrick, which is at the center of American bioterrorism research.
“The US should respect science and facts, cooperate as soon as possible with the WHO, invite international experts to conduct investigations into the origin of the virus and share the results of the investigations with the international community,” she stressed. same.
