One human he was killed and seven others were injured in overnight clashes in the Ain al-Khilwa Palestinian refugee camp in southern Lebanon, a Palestinian official said today.

The clashes pitted President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah and Islamist organizations in the camp, Lebanon’s largest, where the government does not exercise its authority, Fatah official Munir al-Maqdah said.

Clashes between rival groups often break out in Ain al-Khilwa where they live 54,000 Palestinians refugees, to which are added other Palestinians who fled the war in Syria.

“We are using all the Palestinian forces in order to put an end to the conflicts,” said M. al-Maqdah, clarifying that “meetings are underway” for this purpose.

According to an AFP correspondent, the guns fell silent at dawn but sporadic gunfire was still heard this morning.

The situation in the camp is tense, with gunmen deployed in its straits and UNRWA schools closed today.

Based on a long-standing agreement, the army does not enter Palestinian settlements, where security is ensured by Palestinian factions.

Consequently, there are zones where the law does not apply within the camps — Ain al-Khilwa is known to have hosted extremists and wanted persons in the past.

More than 450,000 Palestinians have been registered as refugees in Lebanon, according to Unrwa.
