Ukrainian and Russian thugs were working together in Spain to steal money and valuables from Ukrainian refugees who settled in the country after the Russian invasion, local police said.

The suspects, seven Ukrainians and three Russians, had targeted refugees who, when fleeing, had taken with them “all their savings and items of great value”, according to the police authorities. The ten arrested are believed to have broken into seven houses of Ukrainian refugees in the provinces of Alicante and Murcia.

The police confiscated various items worth around 1.25 million euros, jewelry and computers. Among the valuable items was a stamp collection valued at half a million euros.

The perpetrators had installed GPS devices in the cars used by the victims so that they could track their movements.

Spain has taken in around 160,000 Ukrainian refugees since the Russian invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Recently, the authorities announced that they dismantled a network that ran three tobacco factories where refugees were forced to work in shantytowns.
