Tennessee is the first US state to legislate against drag shows, citing the exposure of minors to risque sexual content.
White House spokeswoman Karin Jean-Pierre on Friday condemned as “ridiculous” and “dangerous” the bill signed by Tennessee’s Republican governor, Bill Lee, banning drag queen performances in public places in his state.
“These kinds of ridiculous decisions are not only unnecessary, they are also dangerous,” especially “at a time when members of the LGBTQI+ community in the United States face the risk of violence,” President Biden’s spokeswoman complained.
Tennessee is the first US state to legislate against drag shows, citing the exposure of minors to risque sexual content. But other American states, such as Texas, Kansas or Arizona, may follow. In at least 12 US states, elected officials have proposed similar measures.
Drag queen shows are one of the latest areas of contention in states where conservative officials are raising issues revolving around gender or sexuality.
