Two employees of the International Committee of the Red Cross were kidnapped yesterday Saturday in Mali, the mission of the ICRC in the African country announced.

“We confirm the kidnapping of two of our colleagues, in the morning, between the cities of Gao and Kindal,” the relevant announcement states, underlining its presence in Mali for 32 years.

He did not release the names or nationalities of the abductees, asking that “there be no speculation” about the incident in order to facilitate efforts to resolve the crisis and free the hostages as soon as possible.

For more than a decade, conflict has raged in several parts of Mali, particularly in those where jihadists have established a presence, while kidnappings of civilians (including foreigners) are a frequent occurrence. Kidnappers’ motives vary, from ransom extortion to acts of revenge.

Last month, a kidnapped World Health Organization doctor was released.
