Japan’s coast guard is searching today for seven people missing after their vessel, which was last seen near the Senkaku Islands — claimed by China, where they are known as the Diaoyu — capsized.

The boat was seen yesterday Sunday, after it had capsized, by a patrol boat of the Japanese Navy north of the islands, a representative of the Japanese coast guard explained to AFP.

The uninhabited islands are managed by Tokyo.

According to the Japanese Coast Guard spokesman, the crew of the vessel consisted of one Taiwanese national and six Indonesian nationals.

“We are conducting searches in the area with patrol cars and helicopters after we received the information at around 13:30 (local time; 06:30 Greek time) yesterday Sunday from the Navy,” he explained.

According to Japanese media, the overturned ship is from Taiwan. However, the Japanese Coast Guard said it had little information, other than that it was probably a fishing vessel.

The spokesman said Japanese authorities were coordinating their investigations with Taiwan, which also claims the islands.
