Court of Moscow today sentenced a Russian student to eight and a half years in prison because he posted on Telegram “false” information about the Russian military.
Student of the Mathematics and Informatics department at Lomonosov University of Moscow23-year-old Dmitry Ivanov, was found guilty of spreading “false news about the Russian military motivated by political hatred”, the Russian news agency reported Tass.
This offence, which was added to the Russian criminal code after the invasion of Ukraine, has repeatedly given heavy prison terms to people who have publicly criticized the war.
On his Telegram account “Protestny MGU” (Protesting MGU), which he created to denounce violations of students’ rights, Ivanov posted, among other things, messages criticizing the Russian invasion of Ukraine and statements by the Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky.
Russia is calling the invasion of Ukraine a “special military operation” and authorities have adopted a bill that provides for penalties of up to 15 years in prison for anyone who publishes information about the military “you liars”.
Thousands of Russians who have publicly criticized the war and the brutality of the Russian military in Ukraine have been ordered to pay fines. Dozens of others, who have been prosecuted after being heavily fined, have been sentenced to heavy prison terms or are awaiting sentencing.
