The New York State Attorney General summoned the two eldest sons of former US President Donald Trump to testify in an investigation into alleged illegal financial maneuvers by the Trump Organization, a conglomerate that brings together several family businesses.
The information was revealed this Monday (3) by The New York Times, based on the opening of the process. In December, the publication had already reported that the attorney general, Letitia James, had summoned the former president to testify until the next 7th.
The family’s lawyers, however, were trying to block the testimony of Trump and his sons Donald Jr., 44 and Ivanka, 40. The Republican’s third eldest son, Eric Trump, 37, was already questioned by the prosecutor’s office in October 2020.
Lawyers for the former president’s family accuse James — who is affiliated with the Democratic Party — of acting politically in conducting the investigations. The argument gained traction when the attorney general announced in October that she would run in the Democratic primaries for the New York government; weeks later, she withdrew from the candidacy.
James also conducted an investigation into alleged sexual harassment by former state governor Andrew Cuomo. The realization that he had harassed 11 women led to the resignation of the politician, who until then was one of the main names in the party.
In the lawsuit involving the Trump family, investigators suspect that the former president illegally increased the value of his assets to secure advantages in bank loans, while decreasing it on other occasions to reduce his taxes.
