Three Los Angeles police officers were shot and wounded Wednesday night as the suspect barricaded himself in a parking lot and died after a major operation, Los Angeles police said.

The three officers were taken to a hospital in stable condition, Los Angeles Police Department Chief Michael Moore said on Twitter.

He added that an operation to neutralize the “gunman” is underway.

Aerial footage broadcast by local television station KCAL-TV, part of the CBS national network, showed a heavy police force cordoning off an area around a parking lot in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood. Police officers in full combat gear are visible.

A police helicopter is overflying the area, with its crew informing residents via loudspeaker to stay inside their homes, the Los Angeles Times reported in its digital edition.

The same newspaper, citing unnamed sources close to the police, noted that the three wounded belonged to a unit that handles specially trained dogs and that they were looking for a suspect when they came under fire.
