The war in Ukraine seems to be entering a new level, as Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the “green light” for the use of heavy weapons.

On Thursday, it hit targets for the first time with hypersonic Kinzhal missiles, which evade air defenses and inflict greater damage.

Moscow has launched a barrage of missile attacks on targets in Ukraine over the past 24 hours, killing at least nine people, while the shelling knocked out power at the Zaporizhia nuclear plant, Europe’s largest.

Russian Defense Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said: “Long-range weapons from the air, sea and land, including the hypersonic Kinzhal missile system, hit key elements of Ukraine’s military infrastructure.”

The Ukrainian military claimed to have successfully shot down 34 cruise missiles and four Iranian Shahed drones.

But it also said it was unable to intercept the six Kinzhal ballistic missiles – nor was it able to destroy older weapons such as Kh-22 anti-ship missiles and S-300 anti-aircraft missiles.

“It was a big attack and for the first time with so many different types of missiles,” a Ukrainian air force spokesman told Reuters news agency.
