THE UK economy returned in a positive growth rate in Januaryrecording output increased by 0.3% according to official figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
The positive performance follows GDP contracting by 0.5% in December, although recession was narrowly avoided in the final quarter of last year.
The economy’s poor performance in December was attributed to a combination of the punctuality crisis and ongoing strikes in various sectors.
The positive growth rate in January is respectively due to the smoother operation of the sectors of the economy affected by the strikes, such as transport, health and education, but also to a large extent to the return of the football teams to the stadiums of the English Premier League after the winter break due to the Qatar World Cup.
Next week Chancellor of the Exchequer Jeremy Hunt will present the budget for the next financial year, which in Britain begins in April.
