King Charles’ younger brother took the title from their late father, Philip, albeit belatedly
The title of Duke of Edinburgh – held by Philip from his marriage to Elizabeth until his death two years ago – passed to Prince Edward today, by decision of his brother, King Charles.
Prince Philip passed away on April 9, 2021, and it took two years to “pass” on to the 59-year-old Earl of Essex, on his birthday today.
Even if belatedly, as the British media comment, the king’s younger brother finally received the historic and significant title, which Queen Elizabeth herself had “ordered” for him when Edward married his wife, Sophia, in 1999.

However, in an unusual move, the title will not “pass” to Edward’s son but, after his death, will revert to the Crown.
