“Today we have gone further than ever to end this disgusting trade in human life. Working together, Britain and France will ensure that no one can exploit our systems with impunity“, added the British Prime Minister.
Earlier in the week, the Sunak government unveiled controversial new legislation that would see anyone arriving in Britain illegally deported quickly, with the right to detain them for 28 days without bail or a trial.
Messrs. Sunac and Macron also discussed their countries’ bilateral cooperation in the fields of security and energy.
Rishi Sunak said there is cooperation with France “so that someone like Putin can never again instrumentalize our energy security”.
He also noted that Britain and France have agreed to train Ukrainian marines so that Ukraine receives “decisive advantage on the battlefield».
President Macron focused on the close historical relationship between the two countries and commented that the talks with Mr. Sunak constitute a “reconnection” and one “new start» for the bilateral relationship.
In Britain, the comment was seen as a jab at Mr Sunak’s predecessors, Liz Truss and Boris Johnson, who were wary of France.
