880 hectares of coca fields and a cocaine-making laboratory have been located and seized in the mountains of central Honduras, the military in Tegucigalpa announced on Sunday.

The operation, in Limones commune, Olandso prefecture (central), about 215 kilometers northeast of the capital, was the result of “intelligence gathering” work, the army explained.

Over a million coca plants and four clandestine laboratories where cocaine was made have already been located and seized in Honduras since the beginning of the year.

In 2022, 4.12 tonnes of cocaine were seized, down from the 11.72 tonnes seized in 2021 in the Central American state.

Honduras is an important part of the transit routes for cocaine produced in Colombia and other substances destined mainly for the North American market.

In July, the country’s authorities extradited alleged gang leader Erlinda Bobadilla, 61, to the US to stand trial on drug charges; she was arrested in May after a shootout with police in which her son was killed.

In April, former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernandez was also extradited to the U.S. to stand trial on drug-trafficking charges, a year and a half after his brother — former congressman — Antonio “Tony” Hernandez was sentenced to life in prison by a New York court. .
