More than 200,000 cases of coronavirus were recorded for the first time in a 24-hour period in the United Kingdom on Tuesday.
The 218,724 cases represent an increase of 63% compared to the previous Tuesday, while on a rolling seven-day basis the increase reaches 51%.
The deaths confirmed in the 24-hour period are 48, bringing the total death toll of coronavirus carriers within 28 days of a positive diagnosis to 148,941.
On a seven-day rolling basis, deaths are also increased by about 52%.
The latest data also show a significant increase in the number of coronavirus carriers hospitalized, which has reached 14,126 (data as of December 31).
Despite the very large increase in cases and hospitalizations, however, the number of intubated Covid carriers has changed only slightly, with 883 patients in need of mechanical respiratory support.
This is about the same number as at the beginning of December, when the total number of patients was half of today.
In London, the number of daily hospital admissions remained below the safety threshold of 400 patients for a third straight day on Sunday, breaking a four-day threshold between December 27-30.
The third dose of the COVID-19 vaccine has been given to over 34.3 million people, or almost 60% of the population aged 12 and over.
