The Kremlin announced today that Russia extends deal on grain from its Black Sea ports for 60 daysechoing earlier statements from the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The deal to unblock Ukrainian grain exports from the Black Sea following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was brokered by Turkey last year with the United Nations acting as an observer.

The agreement is automatically extended every 120 days if neither side raises objections.

Both Ukraine and Turkey have said the deal, which is due to expire on Saturday, should be fully implemented under current terms, including the 120-day duration. But in a conference call with reporters, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov answered a question about Moscow’s position as follows: “Russia renews deal for 60 days”.

Alessandra Vellucci, director of the United Nations Intelligence Service, said negotiations for an extension were continuing.

“The agreement provides for a 120-day renewal. There are talks going on and we’re not going to speculate on what’s going to happen. This is about the outcome of the talks,” he said.
